A vicar from Small Health, has been highlighting the extra difficulties for people living in poverty when it comes to winter months. Father Oliver Cross will be running a winter night shelter on January and February, when “it becomes less possible to sleep out”.
Father Cross also challenges people and policies to “sort out housing and employment” and take a step “to get off the streets.”
Last year 3,140 people in Birmingham were given the homeless in priority need of housing status according to statistics from the Department for Communities and Local Government.
Although the number of homeless has slightly decreased from 3,957 to 3,140 for the last three years, the overall trend shows a fluctuating pattern throughout the last ten years, reaching a maximum of 4,663 in 2004/05 .
